NEWSDAY- A TREE DIES ON LONG ISLAND
I must confess that despite their ridiculous political slant, I still read the Newsday, as they have a pretty good sports section, and they keep me appraised of all the severe car accidents and high crimes on Long island in the hope that I do not know anyone involved.
With that said, ( and I really hate that expression), I found that being the conscientious environmentalist that I am, there really was no reason for me to receive the actual paper any longer , as I could read it on line from anywhere. No more ink on my fingers, crinkled pages throughout the paper usually in all the articles I find of interest, and think about all the trees I would save. (Actually the only thing good about the physical paper is that it serves as great kindling for my winter fires in the fireplace.)
I decided to call Newsday to tell them of the environmentally prudent decision I made. Based on the fact that not a day goes by where Newsday doesn’t rip apart the present administration for not caring or doing anything about global warming or the environment, I was expecting some some award for my thoughtfulness to the world. Instead, the lovely women, who I might add was from a “land unknown”, and spoke the same unknown English, placed me on hold. (On a side note, I am not sure how many companies this women from Land Unknown works for, because I know I have spoken to her at Verizon, Keyspan, Sirius radio, Cablevision, Chewy and the list goes on.) Anyway, she comes back and tells me that the price for Newsday digital, which would allow me to read the paper on my IPAD, computer, etc., was going to be $9.39 per week. Her English was so bad, I had her repeat this 3 times, but was given the same response. I told her I then wanted to cancel my subscription, as I could get my news for free on line at any time. I was quickly ushered back on hold. Upon her return, I was told that if I continued paper service, receiving the physical paper Thursday and Sunday, which would include on line access to the paper as well for the price of $3.09 per week. I had to get clarification. This could not be. So I asked her “ Do you mean to tell me that Newsday is willing to give me 2 papers during the week and full access to the on line paper for $3.09 and that just the on line service was going to be $9.39.?” The answer.my friends, was a resounding YES!!!!
As environmentally conscious as I wanted to be, I had to take this deal. It was a win win. Newsday was happy, I was happy, and my fireplace was happy. Unfortunately, to my neighbors, I continue to pollute the air and remain an accomplice to killing trees. At this time I want to thank Newsday for their environmental awareness as well as their business savvy.
